My life's work has always been focused on the dynamic
pursuit and creative study of physical movement. As a dance
professional I have spent many years performing,
choreographing and teaching various ways of understanding
movement and the communicative powers of this moving
intuitive art. While the pursuit of dance has been my
greatest endeavor I have always been captivated by myriad
athletic challenges. As a child I was constantly reprimanded
for doing cartwheels and walkovers in the living room. Then
as a teenager I sommersaulted in myriad junior Olympic and
AAU diving competitions. As a freshman in college I took first
place in the North Eastern Regional Collegiate Diving
Championships. It was at that time that I was first introduced
to the art of dance and discovered a love that inspired me to
undertake the kinesthetic challenges and creative discipline
with much zeal and anticipation.
I began dancing professionally with Delta Phi Ballet Optique, a
modern dance troupe in France. Returning to the states I
performed as Artistic Director of Circle of Dance in New York
choreographing numerous works. At that time I also taught
on the dance faculty of Hofstra University and served as Artist-
in-Residence working throughout the Long Island Public
School System presenting educational workshops and
developing curriculum.
I was drawn into the fitness field when I was impressed by
the considerable endurance benefits I had achieved through a
cardiovascular and fitness oriented conditioning program. I
experienced agility and power gains which went beyond
those I had obtained through customary dance techniques.
Experience
As a choreographer and performer experimenting with the
dynamics of whole body lifts, the additional fitness and
awareness benefits I achieved through this program
became an indispensable tool in the fulfillment of my
choreographic ideas. As I became more involved in fitness I
came to know the irreplaceable value of such conditioning
not only for the facility with which it served my artistic vision
but for the overall health benefits I experienced including
enhanced physical and mental acuity, increased energy,
psychological clarity, emotional balance, sustained essential
wellness, and improved quality of life which everyone can
benefit from.
As a dancer and choreographer pulling movement together
into whole gestalts, it came naturally to me to embrace a
holistic approach toward health and fitness as well. This
included a somatic approach which incorporated dance
and fitness techniques with yoga practice and pilates. Yoga
and pilates move to harmonize the body and mind through an
integral orientation of movement contemplation, breathing
and meditation, core control, flexibility and strength, balance
and stability, utilizing principles of dynamic functionality and
wholeness.
It is my aspiration as a movement facilitator and teacher to
inspire my students not only toward the beautiful
quintessential body they long to be but more importantly to
encourage them to seek and appreciate the deeper meaning
of a life empowered by a holistic somatic practice of
movement contemplation and awareness supported by
healthy lifestyle choices and sustained action.
