Welcome

Hello , my name is Maureen
I call my practice SOMA-KINETICS, a form of experiential movement and contemplative awareness. I integrate imagery and kinesthesia, meditation and visualization, journalling and active imagination in my personal pedagogy. As a dancer and choreographer I have dedicated many years studying ways of understanding not only the informative and communicative power of the expressive body but the dynamic healing potential of the moving fit body as well. Mentoring and coaching others I acknowledge and embrace movement as the most energizing and empowering essence of a healthy lifestyle, instrumental to sensations of well being, happiness and longevity. I teach the joy of movement not only to nurture supple fit bodies but to engender a sentiency of subjective power, freedom, personal agency and intuitive awareness. I advocate moving with purpose and intention to facilitate edifying experiences of authentic embodiment that are explicitly and intrinsically rewarding, liberating to the conscious mind, awakening the slumbering soul, prompting rejuvenation of the whole person and vital self. I teach multi-level group classes and offer private instruction in a variety of soma-kinetic forms that incorporate elements of dance, yoga, pilates, and tai chi. When my students ask me what they should do to get fit and stay in shape I tell them to “just keep moving.” Moving is essential to life. Our bodies were designed to move. When our bodies cease to move, when oxygen ceases to flow in and out of our expanding and contracting lungs and the blood ceases to flow through our pulsating hearts and minds, guess what, we are no longer alive.
So to keep our bodies, mind and whole selves as healthy and as vital as possible it is necessary to keep moving. We need to move and to keep moving we need to find the joy in moving. Moving with joy is vital to our wellness and longevity. To move vitally with joy means embracing the pleasurable sensation of exercising all the integral parts of our physical being including the spirit that dwells within. That means engaging the experience of moving with our total being, our complete selves including not only our physical bodies but our curious creative minds as well as our pleasure seeking souls. Moving joyfully is a holistic endeavor that embraces all aspects of our physical, emotional, psychological, and spiritual well being.
Therefore to move joyfully and to appease our pleasure seeking souls we must find an activity that we like to do and then do it on a regular basis, engaging the activity with a sense of dedication, discipline, and gratitude. We need to make a commitment to ourselves to do what our bodies and spirits need and want. We must put our hearts and souls fully into it to find the joy that is surely there. If we find something that we need but do not enjoy, we will not stay with it for very long. So finding the joy is essential and imperative. Embracing and keeping the joy will spill over into all aspects of one’s life. Whatever your movement incentives or fitness goals I can help you find and achieve them. I have the experience, methods, insights and motivation that can help you realize your somatic potential and holistic dreams.
